The world renowned Leyte Dance Theater (LDT) performed at Teatr Polski on 7 June 2016 highlighting the celebrations in Poland of the 118thAnniversary of the Proclamation of the Philippine Independence. Ambassador Patricia Ann V. Paez delivered welcoming remarks which recalled that Poland was among the first countries that extended help to the Philippines in the aftermath of typhoon Haiyan and that Leyte was the hardest-hit province. The LDT was given a standing ovation after its almost 2-hour performance. The event was attended by around 700 mostly Polish audience filling the historic and prestigious Teatr Polski in Warsaw. The LDT composed of 19 performers and headed by its Artistic Director and Choreographer Mr. Jess de Paz performed various dance numbers inspired by the numerous regions and historic periods of the Philippines. The LDT opened its repertoire with “Kasingkil” – a Muslim inspired dance choreography depicting the legend of the “Darangan” of the Maranao people of Mindanao which garnered thunderous applause; followed by “Kuratsa” a courtship dance influenced by the Spanish era. The ever popular “Tinikling” was likewise a big hit. For the finale, the LDT’s rendition of “Lupang Hinirang” stirred the audience emotions. Seven (7) individuals; specifically five (5) Polish nationals and two (2) from the Filipino community in Poland were awarded plaques of appreciation in recognition of their great contribution in strengthening the relations and friendship between the Philippines and Poland. The audience was treated with a modest reception. The LDT joined the audience for the post-performance reception. . The performance of the LDT in Warsaw is the first leg of their European Tour which also includes performances in Vienna, Austria – 10 June 2016; Prague, Czech Republic-15 June 2016; Berne, Switzerland- 17 June 2016 and will culminate in Geneva, Switzerland – 20 June 2016.
