Philippine non-resident envoy to the Republic of Estonia Ambassador Patricia Ann V. Paez held preliminarly talks with Mr. Tiit Sarv of Profexpo about the Philippines’ possible participation in next year’s Tallinn Food Fair (Tallinna Toidumes) to promote the Philippines’ food products and its culinary culture. Profexpo is the exclusive organizer of the Tallinn Food Fair.
Upon the invitation of Mr. Sarv, Amb. Paez attended this year’s 16th edition of the Tallinn Food Fair, which was held from 28 to 30 October 2015 at the Estonian Fairs Centre. She looked into other countries’ participation as well as the products being promoted, watched the chefs’ competition; met with several exhibitors; and attended demonstration sessions of state-of-the-art culinary and food processing technologies.
Amb. Paez also met with the representatives of the Estonian Crop Rsearch Institute specifically with Ms. Lea Narits and Ms. Margit Ole. The Institute is under the Estonian Ministry of Agriculture and its “research and development activities support the increase of efficiency and competitiveness of agricultural production, decraese the negative impact of agricultural production on the environment, and help preserve agro-biodiversity.”
It also oversees a programme called “Collection and Conservation of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture in 2014-2020.” According to the Institute, “more than 3000 accessions from 58 species of cereals, oilseeds, forage crops, and vegetables are in long-termex situ preservation in its Gene Bank. At present, the Institute is collaborating with China regarding the production of soybean and oat; and with Japan, for the production of white clover.
The Tallinn Food Fair offers “a full range of food and beverage products, cutting-edge technologies and equipment for food production and serving, as well as packaging and industrial equipment. It is an “internationally recognized source of trade opportunities for food related industries - from hotels, restaurants and catering services, to retailers, importers, distributors, producers, and exporters. It is also widely covered by the media not only from Estonia but from the other Baltic States of Latvia and Lithuania.
The Food Fair has over 170 exhibitors and, on the average, has been attracting at least 7,000 visitors. The Fair began in 1993 and is now on its 16th year. Its 17th edition will be held in October 2016.
