"MOVE WITH PINAS" ONLINE WORKSHOP ON THE SAKUTING DANCE
Following the success of "Move with Malong: An Online Philippine Dance Workshop", the Department of Foreign Affairs, in partnership with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Philippine Barangay Folk Dance Troupe, presents another interactive cultural experience that will take you from wherever you are in the world straight to the Philippines.
On 30 July 2022, 10:00 a.m. (Philippine Standard Time), we invite you to participate in the workshop and dance the Sakuting with the rest of the world!
Due to the time difference, we will also share the recorded link for this event in due time.
The Sakuting dance originated from the province of Abra and employs arnis, the traditional Filipino art of stick fighting. During the Spanish colonial period, the practice of arnis was banned, forcing it to go underground. However, Filipinos found ways to clandestinely preserve the practice by making the arnis movements a part of the folk dance. The dance combines the traditional story of the struggle between lowland Christians and non-Christian mountain people during the Spanish period and a two-stick arnis exercise set to rondalla music.
